CBD in the pet world

0136322001568734669.jpgHi All,

Oscar here.

Everyone deals with anxiety. Whether it's a result of work stress, relationship stress, or general life stress, these things can take their toll in various degrees. Now, when it comes to dealing with this condition, people have any number of different ways to handle anxiety. Some people work out. Others try acupuncture. Other people see therapists. The list goes on. But recently, a trend has arisen that seems to be an anxiety cure all. CBD.

You may or may not have heard of CBD but as a quick tutorial about it, it's short for Cannabidiol which is one component of Cannabis. However, unlike THC which is the component in marijuana which gets you high, CBD has different properties and has been proven to have a variety of beneficial properties, everything from helping with the aforementioned anxiety, to insomnia to chronic pain. Although the health benefits of CBD are inconclusive, there has been enough supporting evidence that it helps that people are hopping on the CBD bandwagon.

Recently, CBD has moved past the realm of human health and into the world of animal health treatment. Veterinarians are beginning to use CBD to treat ailments in their pets, including everything from arthritis pain to anxiety. Knowledge about this treatment is equally inconclusive but dogs "seem to be less reactive to low level pain stimuli, for example arthritis and things like that, when they take the product,” according to Mark Verdino, MD, senior vice president and chief of veterinary staff at North Shore Animal League America.

One note of caution however, when determining whether CBD is right for your pet, is to first of all consult with your docs at the PPAC before putting your pet on any meds to ensure you're dosing properly, etc. Additional, always be sure to select animal specific products. Lots of CBD products are currently distributed in gummy form. And some gummies may be sweetened with Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can be toxic for animals. So again, do your research first.

Til' next time,

Oscar
