Do you remember the story of Goldilocks and the three bears? That whole thing where Goldilocks stumbled into this bear family's home and tried out their beds and their food and their chairs until she found the one which was just right?
Well last week, a dog came into the PPAC vomiting and suffering from diarrhea. A few months prior, Dr. S. the Elder had put him on a special diet consisting of hydrolyzed protein. Basically what that means is, some dogs are allergic to certain ingredients in dog food at a molecular level. When allergic dogs try to eat and process this type of food, their bodies react negatively, and the allergy manifests itself in skin irritation as well as the aforementioned vomiting and diarrhea.
A month or so after that, the family came in for a checkup and the pooch seemed to be doing OK. The particular diet the pooch was on happened to be a very pricey one so the owners understandably broached the topic about whether the dog might be OK on a slightly different, less expensive, hydrolyzed diet. Dr. S. said they should give it a go so they tried poochy out on that and sadly, it was not a good fit—the poor guy was back vomiting and pooping. So in he was brought to the PPAC yet again. Once there, as you might have guessed, he was prescribed to go back on the original diet.
So how does this relate to Goldilocks, you might be asking? Well, regular dog food wasn't good. Semi- hydrolyzed food wasn't quite right. But there was a perfect diet for pooch—one that made him feel just right,
If your dog has any of the above symptoms, it might be dietary related so it's worth bringing them in to the PPAC for a look-see.
Til' next time,
